In a bid to become self-sustainable the orphanage is keen to make its own produce wherever possible. There are a number of projects underway and it is hoped that, with the help of volunteers, we will soon have a full-scale organic farm.
Fruit
There are a number of mature trees and bushes around the site including;
- Bananas
- Pineapple
- Papaya
- Palm
More have recently been planted and it is hoped that these will be sufficient to provide the whole year round.
Vegetables
The aim is to grow as many of the vegetables and herbs used in cooking as possible.
These include;
- Cucumbers
- Tomatoes
- Long beans
- Lettuce
- Chillis
- Corriander
Eggs
The site has a chicken house with around 150 birds and during the day they are allowed to wander within the confines of a large pen (approx. 60m2). It is hoped that this will be sufficient to provide the orphanage with enough eggs.
Nothing is wasted and the chicken poo is used as fertiliser on the organic vegetable beds.
Fish
There are a number of ponds around the site which are being used to grow various breeds of fish. These are eating fish and will be used within the kitchen.
